What is the value of a degree?

A university degree is often considered a prerequisite for success in today’s world. However, there is often a debate about whether the value of a university degree lies in preparing individuals for the industry or providing them with an opportunity to play and learn.

On the one hand, a university degree is a valuable asset for individuals seeking employment in various industries. Universities offer specialised courses and training programs that help individuals acquire industry-specific skills and knowledge. These skills can be a major asset when applying for jobs and advancing one’s career. Furthermore, many employers view a university degree as an indicator of an individual’s work ethic, dedication, and ability to think critically.

On the other hand, a university degree can also be seen as an opportunity for individuals to play and learn. Universities offer a vast range of courses and programs that are not necessarily geared towards a specific industry but are instead designed to broaden an individual’s horizons and foster personal growth. These courses can provide individuals with the opportunity to explore new fields and areas of interest, helping them develop a more well-rounded and informed perspective on the world.

As lecturers who teach creative practical degrees, it’s our responsibility lies in both preparing individuals for the industry and providing them with an opportunity to play and learn. While industry-specific skills are important, a university education should also be viewed as an opportunity for personal growth and development.
