My Positionality

As a 58-year-old white male from a middle-class background, I recognize that my positionality significantly influences my perspectives and experiences. My identity as a heterosexual Christian man and my professional background in the television and video industry for over three decades shape how I perceive and engage with the world around me.

My upbringing in a middle-class family has granted me certain privileges, such as access to quality education, I have a BA degree in Communications and professional opportunities through my family network. I acknowledge that these privileges have played a major role in my career success.

Being a white male, I am conscious of the fact that I belong to a dominant group in the Television industry, which has shaped my worldview in ways that I may not always be aware of. An unconscious basis may have formed as most of my career, I have mainly been working with people who look like me with similar backgrounds. I am committed to examining the ways in which my race and gender intersect with my professional experiences and impact my teaching.

I recognize that my students come from a wide range of backgrounds, and I strive to foster an inclusive learning environment that encourages open dialogue and mutual respect. I actively seek to incorporate diverse perspectives into my curriculum and challenge my students to examine their positionality and the role of media in shaping societal attitudes and beliefs.

My positionality as a white, middle-class, heterosexual, Christian male has undeniably shaped my personal and professional experiences. I am dedicated to continually reflecting on my positionality, engaging in critical conversations, and using my platform as an educator to foster a more diverse and inclusive television and video industry. By acknowledging and addressing the impact of my positionality, I strive to be a more effective and empathetic educator, mentor, and colleague.
